Today we: were incredibly focused during our literacy activities this morning. Everyone was on task, quietly working on word work and our block rotation activities. Many points were earned with the level of dedication! They were also given five minutes to organize and clean their bins (put worksheets in duotangs, recycle unwanted papers, locate lost pencils, etc.) and they did a great job!

In math, we worked on practice questions for adding and subtracting decimals. Students were encouraged to try first on their own, then compare answers with a peer, and then we marked them as a class. A small group was given one-on-one instruction to review how to "borrow" when doing step-by-step subtraction. Decimals seem to be going fairly quickly, we will likely start multiplying and dividing next week, so we will be putting our laminated times tables back to work!

We had a work period to do more writing for our newspaper article on fractured fairytales. Some students finished their first rough copy and partnered with a peer for some editing. There was a lot of re-writing; it is hard to remember that an article is meant to report an event, not tell a detailed story again. This was excellent practice for the creative writers to try something different.

After lunch we watched an online seminar about narrative writing for video games as part of the Literacy Conference. They learned about how important a story line is for a game, and what the speaker had to do in school to be good at his job. A great learning experience in an area of so much interest.

The class had music and gym in the afternoon, but in between we finished up a worksheet we started yesterday on energy labels. They had to run around the school looking for labels on electronic devices and record the wattage used by each one. Today we calculated how many watts are used over a timespan.

See you tomorrow, 5A!
